Pastor Reid Walker
After graduating high school in Louisville, KY, Pastor Reid attended DePauw University in Indiana. In 1975, he graduated with a BA Degree in history and business and was ready to “conquer the corporate world.” Pastor Reid began working as a sales manager for Proctor and Gamble in 1975, becoming a top seller and being promoted twice within his first eighteen months.
In 1975 Pastor Reid married and later had two daughters. A few years after they were born, he began to think of attending church but let his career get in the way. Later, due to bad investments and not saving for the future, Pastor Reid lost everything materialistic in his life. That is when he began to understand truly God’s calling on his life. Pastor Reid believes God spoke directly to him while attending church with his friend. After a lot of soul searching, he had the opportunity to attend Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, KY, in 1992. From making $146,000 a year to washing dishes at the seminary for $5.10 per hour, God began humbling him.
Now stripped bare of earthly things, turning his life over to God was the best decision of his life. In 1995, Pastor Reid began his journey as a man of God and started preaching the word. Pastor Reid says, “I am still selling. Now it’s the best product of all, and Jesus comes with a lifetime guarantee.”
In June 2001, 2004, and 2005, Pastor Reid traveled to Africa, preaching the word of God, living in slums and shanties. It was there he began to see what the word of God was really about. He went from people who have so much who think they have nothing to people who have nothing who think they have so much. It is really not about the building you worship in. Those people would walk a day just to worship. While in Africa, Pastor Reid began to blossom into a more outgoing approach of worship. Now he says, “I’ve got more soul than I can control.” If you want to hear God’s beauty, listen to African believers singing! Wow – it’s like heaven on earth.
Pastor Reid also traveled South to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. What he saw there will remain in his heart and mind forever. He saw firsthand the disaster of FEMA and the Red Cross’ efforts in Mississippi; but the churches, Salvation Army, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), and others really made it happen. Pastor Reid helped take water purifiers to the Gulf to help restore short-term drinking water.
Pastor Reid now spends time in prison ministry and frequently visits prison inmates at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. He is also active in the Kairos Prison ministry outreach.
Mt. Comfort Church is his fourth preaching position, but his first as a senior pastor. He considers Mt. Comfort Church the greatest challenge and opportunity of his life. His first worship service at Mt. Comfort Church was on July 6, 2008. Importantly, church should be fun. People should think their deepest thoughts, laugh their biggest laugh, and cry their biggest tears – all in church. To that end, in 2008 Pastor Reid created a baseball series in August, used Silly Putty in September, and in 2009 used dryer lint during the season of Lent which precedes Easter. “God created us and made us creative. Shouldn’t we be challenged in our faith in very creative ways?” says Pastor Reid.
Although Pastor Reid didn’t prepare to be a pastor during his whole life through formal teaching, he believes life experiences will be helpful to his congregation. Other than living on the street, he has pretty much been through it all: divorce, being a single father, and poverty. God has given him life experience through every scenario. His life’s struggles have led him to a tremendous sense of humor about anything and everything.
When Pastor Reid is not busy spreading the word of God at church, he will most likely be on the golf course or spending time with his three dogs, Cooper, Oscar, and Max. Golf is his therapy and a great way to meet people. Pastor Reid loves to try to get to the back nine holes before he tells people what he does.
Pastor Reid looks forward to just being together and seeing where the Lord leads us. He is eager to share his love and the love of God with all.
